Poetic, magical and beautifully written although can sometimes feel slow. Deep understanding of the interconnection of everything. Some difficult content for younger listeners. Ultimately, a wonderful message of love.

This book was wonderfully awful. It was wonderful. Expertly written, compelling characters, great theme and one of the worst bad guys I have ever read. Awful because the story delves deeply into a harsh man’s motivations and the burn of…

A whimsical, ethereal, magical story.

The Underneath is written with phenomenal expression, and Kathi Appelt does an excellent job of switching characters to bring suspense, but not to the point that you are confused about characters and events. The story she has written is…

Beatiful book! I struggled with the animal cruelty, but the well-written prose and sweet characters won me over. I also loved the connecting story lines. 4/5 stars

What is even happening here? A children's book, originally intended as a short story then lengthened, contains many aspects unexpected. Directly open happy ending? Not at all. Instead, there is an elaborate scheme going on behind the…

Had to go back and re-read the last 50 pages to more slowly absorb this well-written book's nuances. The first time I hurried through to see how the story lines converged and what would happen to characters I cared about.

This book made me cry, I have a soft point for animals, but it was still a great book and I absolutely loved it. I hate animals getting hurt but I was happy with the way the story ended... I just wish the mother cat hadn't died.

It is rare that I read a book in two hours flat, be it a children's book or not. It is even more rare for me to finish a book, close it, put it down, and immediately burst into tears. What a wonderful, wonderful read.

This is a great heartbreaking story that will catch any readers attention. The way Ranger's sadness is described is pretty sad and might leave the reader with tears but it also shows his kind and good heart. This is a unique story that…

The Underneath is defiently a story that keeps the reader interested. I dont recommend this book to children unless they are able to handle animaly cruelty, violence and overall a sad plot or evironment for animals. This story is like a…

I think this story is a great one. It has very sad and harsh moments, but it also teaches lessons within it. I love how the illustrations were just as powerful as the words on the page. I think that this book needs to be read by children…

"The Underneath" is a great read! It is one of those books that is very hard to put down once you start reading it. While reading the book I experienced many emotions, I was afraid, angry, sad, happy, and surprised. The author does a great…

This is a wonderful book but definitely not for children. I started reading it with my 4th grader and couldn't let her read beyond the second chapter. I sobbed during parts as the story is heartbreaking at times. I also found several…

The short chapters and lovely phrases make this an ideal read-aloud, but Appelt doesn't pull any punches. This may not be the right book for sensitive animal lovers. David Small's pencil illustrations are placed sporadically but clearly…

This book is very sad at times, but there are also some happy parts. This may not be the best book if you like animals, but it is worth reading.

This is a lovely, lyrical book. Although it is a children's book, it encompasses themes that are ageless. I highly recommend it for parents and children to read together, as well as for all those who love it when language sings.
