One perceptive reviewer at the time of this film's release summed it up pretty well when he noted MacLaine's performance as splendid but complained that Bob Fosse directed with too much flash, "as though he didn't trust the material." Still, the musical numbers are sexy and memorable, MacLaine is touching and funny as the hapless title character Charity, and dancers Chita Rivera (the original Anita in the Broadway cast of "West Side Story") and Paula Kelly are solid support as Charity's street-smart best friends.

Interesting because it is the first movie directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse. While it has some interesting dance numbers, the plot is thin, and as in all of Fosse's work, somewhat autobiographical. An interesting read to accompany this is the book, All His Jazz. Also the movie All That Jazz, his movie autobiography. MacLaine is outstanding. Fosse was dead by the time the movie Chicago was filmed, likely the reason for its great success-based on his Broadway choreography.

Shirley MacLaine gave it her all, but her all wasn't enough to rescue this fairly boring story.

Great performance by Shirley MacLaine. Great musical hits.

Interesting to see how much of Fosse's style stayed consistently through "All That Jazz" and "Chicago." The movie style, overall, has a definite late-sixties feel, but the Fosse addition gives it a bit of spice. (Plot not all that interesting, though ...)
