Hugh Grant's best work but James Wilby steals the show as Maurice.
In the style of Forster's books this movie slowly draws you in with its pastoral beauty and captivating characters. Set in the era when British class and station in life defined you and hypocrisy reigned this movie is a tribute to those who helped painfully pave the way for the right to love whomever you choose.

Directed by James Ivory in 1987 based on the novel by E.M. Forster, this British drama delves into a gay-love story in early 20th-century England.
Set against the stifling conformity of pre-WWI British society, the story follows its main character Maurice Hall through university, a tumultuous relationship, struggling to fit into society.
And ultimately Maurice seems united with his life partner.
The director has amazingly recreated the pre-WWI England.
To the eyes of the heterosexual audience, however, the platonic passion between two upper-class Englishmen appears superficial.
What makes the both men attact to each other so much?
How come Maurice gets attracted to the gamekeeper?
The film doesn't elaborate on these points.

Yes, it is a surprisingly happy ending for a homosexual story printed after E. M. Forester's death. Great acting-even by Hugh Grant. Merchant-Ivory again create the past: Edwardian era at Cambridge.

Great story! The movie makes me want to read the book. I was pleasantly surprise by the cast and their great roles. It was great to see a period piece where gay characters love each other and want to be happy!

Worthwhile viewing from Merchant/Ivory. This classic gay love story by E.M.Forster about an upper-crust master and a game-runner actually has a happy ending. Watch Hugh Grant portray a closet homosexual: what a stretch. See Rupert Graves' bush and tush. Quite a stretch.
