We love the Carl books! I used this book when I taught first grade. Obviously, it's FICTION. lol No one leaves the dog to babysit. Even tiny children can understand the difference between funny fiction and real life. The best part of this book is that it's a wordless book. You can sit with your young child and tell the story in your own words by looking at the pictures. This is an emergent literacy and language acquisition skill. As they get older, you can help them write the words they think should go on each page on sticky notes and place them on the page, perfect writing activity! Find and enjoy these wordless books!

While these books are considered to be classics in children's literature, they are mostly a lesson in terrible parenting.

You can tell this book is from the 80's. That parent would be in jail today!!!
The dog puts the kid into water twice - not very bright. I did not think it was funny at all.
PASS on this one!!!

i think this is a very fun book, it is child friendly, even if it is not a true story.

Love this book! The popular children's show Barney the Dinosaur features children being left alone in a daycare center until a stuffed dinosaur magically comes to life to teach them. If no one is complaining about that I don't see the issue with this book. It's a funny story with beautiful illustrations and children will either be too young to be afraid of it or old enough to laugh at it.

Carl's owner is a terrible parent.

Beautiful illustrations but the story is crazy - mom leaves the house and leaves the dog in charge of the baby, who gets into all kinds of danger

Obviously, a mother would never leave her baby with a dog for a babysitter. This is a sweet and funny book. The kids get a great laugh from it's absurdity and totally understand that it's for fun, not a true story.

Terrible book, I actually think it should be taken off the shelves. A lady leaves her baby to be baysat by a dog, it also includes swimming in a fish tank and having a bath. A dog is not a babysitter. These are dangerous images.
