Describes what is known about the Anasazi people, the predecessors of the Pueblo Indians, looks at the ruins of their cliff dewellings, and surveys their jewelry, pottery, textiles, and baskets A handsome oversized book (9x12") in the same format as Rizzoli's The Olmec and The Aztecs with 222 illustrations (ca. 100 in fair to excellent color). On the people that dominated the southern Colorado Plateau roughly 800 to 1,000 years ago (Brady, Maxwell Museum of Anthro., U. of New Mexico, places the Anasazi at "less than 2,000 years ago" in his first chapter). The book offers abundant and (generally) well-informed text for the non-specialist reader on the land, methods of study, the contemporary peoples, and the rise, the classic period (Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde) and dispersion of the Anasazi. A good book. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.
