I saw this movie a long time ago. It made a great impression on me... A disturbed woman, who loves his husband dearly, is ready and willing to destroy herself in order to save him. There is no happy ending, but the film is moving and going in a viewer's soul. It shows how one could be buried under their pains so deeply that they stop paying attention to the sorrows of their partner - and it does not matter how much the couple love each other.

Pretty tragic story but a really really good movie. Emily Watson is such an amazing actress and this was her first film role which is just excellently done. She is great in all her movies.

Emily Watson is amazing in this, her first screen role.

yes, long. yes, some scenes not easy to watch. but well worth the investment of time and understanding.

I liked both this and Melancholia, the only 2 vT films I have watched.

von Trier's only dogme film is The Idiots. this is von Trier but not dogme.

Love Lars von Trier films but couldn't watch this one.

Yuk.

The film by director Lars von Trier may be a good drama but the use of the 'Dogma' style o filming, i.e. fast panning cameras, and grainy images took much of the enjoyment away.

Ground breaking love story between a "feeble minded" older maiden (Emily Watson Oscar-nominated) and her roughneck new husband. Rave reviews that I concur:

This movie tries to address too many controversial issues: faith vs. love, spirituality vs. mental health, and insiders vs. outsiders, to name a few. Emily Watson does an incredible job as Bess; however, the lack of plot eventually overwhelms everything.
