When Dave Drayton notices a strange mist on the lake, he does not think much of it. Later, when his son, Billy, his neighbor Brent Norton, and he travel to the grocery store, strange things begin to happen. On their way to the market, they see the army, the local firefighters, and the police heading toward the mist. When he sees this, Brent mentions something about "Project Arrowhead," a secret military plan that no one knows about. When an elderly man runs into the market with a bloody nose, declaring that something is in the mist, the store immediately becomes besieged by otherworldly creatures which the shoppers and employees must battle.

Great horror movie! Super creepy mist devours the town. We watch the people trapped in the grocery store. Then some of the trapped want to go out despite knowing something in the mist is dangerous. Morons run into the mist. The genetic pool is cleaned! I enjoyed this movie.

Tension at the maximum. Be ready for tough ride. Absolutely great movie! Tight script.

A man goes shopping with his young son at a small nearby grocery store while his wife stays at home alone. A lot of odd characters are in the store, which makes for an interesting movie with a fairly good amount of tension. Eventually, the people in the store realize that there is a thick fog outside, and the father of the boy goes to the back room of the store with a few other men. They realize, after a needless sacrifice, that something terrible is happening outside. The people must stay safe in the midst of the fog, in which lies creatures they’ve never seen before. This was one of the best movies I’ve seen to date, with thrill, although not much horror.

I enjoyed this movie. In the scenario of total chaos, unbelievable things happening, a religious fanatic thinking it is the end of times, all happening in a small supermarket. What can possibly go wrong?

Excellent Stephen King film.
The other-worldly vocal music near the end is Mark Isham's arrangement of "The Host of Seraphim" sung by Lisa Gerrard.

This novella is one of my favorites from King, and though the movie has some high points, the ending wasn't as much of a shock as it was an unnecessary joke. After the scene, I was almost expecting a rim-shot. Immensely disappointed.

way too graphic violence and meaningless plot with predictable characters. I could not watch it all the way through, gross

Only in Hollywood would 15 million dollars qualify as a "low budget" effort. So what do we get for that? Some really SCARY creatures, plus a director who knows how to ramp up the tension. (And some unacknowledged debts to much better efforts like Ridley Scott's "Alien").It's a big "B" picture with some "A" film-making. But please, Frank, SPARE us the Apocalypse and all the biblical references. It doesn't make this picture any more significant, and the "message" sent is totally incoherent. Is the crazed mob supposed to represent the backlash of the Religious Right after 9/11? If so, the denouement serves to prove them correct. Is that what you really wanted to say? (And did you have to wreck Marcia Gay Harden's career to do it?)

Frank Darabont’s haphazard screenplay, based on yet another Stephen King novella, tries to be too many things at once; sci-fi thriller, claustrophobic horror movie, psychological study, and pseudo-religious potboiler. Borrowing very heavily from such films as The Fog, Alien, and The Birds as well as some of the more esoteric writings of H. P. Lovercraft, it concerns a random group of people who seek refuge in the local supermarket when their town is besieged by a most unusual fog bank. It would appear the soupy mist is crawling with all sorts of unpleasantness, from big meat-eating bugs and screeching pterodactyls to huge nasty tentacled things resembling a cross between an octopus and a Venus flytrap. Of course there’s the usual assortment of King mainstays; hysterical women, hero jocks, a cute kid (the movie’s best performance) and, for good measure, a schizoid chick with messianic delusions (Marcia Gay Harden making a fool of herself). As the little band of consumers slowly become the consumed a few hatch a desperate escape plan while the rest succumb to the aimless ramblings of the crazy lady who assures them that the final days are at hand. To be fair, there are some amazing CGI effects and wild visuals in this film which had my skin crawling more than once. The pervasive mist is a wonderfully disorienting device that adds a macabre overtone to all those twisted, half-seen shapes slithering in and out of focus. But even if we forgive some of the film’s more blatantly illogical devices its underlying premise involving secret military mischief is just plain silly. Furthermore, Harden’s guru character is poorly written and her murderous tent revival subplot is harebrained at best. The film’s unexpectedly bleak ending, filled with horror and brutal irony, did come as a surprise though and was effectively paired with the mournful vocalizations of Dead Can Dance. But it was poor consolation for two hours worth of disappointment.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: Some pretty gory scenes, including the remains of half a human body, makes it unsuitable for small children.
