The first of three books, a fascinating teen fantasy, made even more interesting by the unique way it began. The author has several friends who collect odd photographs they find at flea markets and antique shops. I mean REALLY odd photographs of floating children, strange costumes, weird looking families, and other oddities. Ransom assembled a group of these pictures and hypothesized that these were really pictures of children with odd powers, collected together at a school on a small island off the coast of Wales in the 1940’s.

When Jacob Portman was young, he was fascinated by his grandfather, Abe Portman. Grandpa Portman told wild stories of fighting the Nazis, being a spy, and performing in circuses. He had a weird collection of photographs which featured strange children. The rest of his family assumed these were all made up, and even Jacob had his doubts – until he saw his Grandpa murdered by a wolf-like creature. Jacob persuades his father to take him on a summer trip to the island of Cairnholm, where his grandfather said he was moved as a refugee when he was 12. There Jacob discovers that the school is still there and that time has stopped for the children his grandfather knew.

This novel is an eerie combination of Brigadoon and Harry Potter, with Nazi bombs and evil adversaries. Clever characterization and sharp writing help keep a meandering plot from becoming confusing. Much better than the movie.

I can see the movie having appeal but the story is not as compelling as Harry Potter.

Creepy, thrilling, and wonderfully written, 'Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children' was very, very entertaining. And I would've loved it if not for Jacob and his meanness. Like can't a YA main character be nice for once? This book does rise above a lot of other YA, but some parts of it drown in the immense pool of struggling novels. I loved the idea and the premise—what's not to love about a creepy abandoned house with inhabitants who may somehow be still alive—but I didn't love the protagonist or his choices all that much.
So, in conclusion, it's worth a read, but it's definitely disturbing and only for teens and up.

A creepy, interesting, and wholly unique read. Riggs uses found photos in much the way the original Blair Witch Project used found footage. He constructs a narrative where the heroes are complex and vulnerable in an ever shifting world of eldritch horror. Lovecraft eat your heart out.

This book uses a unique method of storytelling by including actual pictures to help tell the story of the Peculiars. This is used to great affect and helps to bring the reader into this creepy, wonderful world. The author has taken great pains to weave a magical story around these bizarre, real world pictures, and it definitely paid off.

The writing draws you in and the pictures keep you captivated, even though they make you shiver and wonder, “How?!” The characters are just as wonderful, and experiencing their Peculiarities through Jacob, the main character, gives us a viewpoint to look through that is both familiar and comforting, yet chock full of the surprise and fascination that would naturally follow seeing such incredible things.

If you enjoy shivering at bizarre things and discovering a magical world nestled right under the nose of the unsuspecting common folk, if you enjoy characters that make you want to dig deep into a story and a world that’s too interesting to resist, I would highly suggest this captivating book!

I read this book with my class as an assignment this year, but I had already read it before in the past. When I read this book for the first time, I was not a big fan of it, because I stopped reading in the middle of the book and watched the movie instead.{which by the way is really good, but a little different than the book}. This book has intensified vocab so if your not that good with definitions then this book is probably not for you, since you won't understand more than half of it. If you are looking for a fantasy than try this book. Whereas, there is a bit of a love story between Emma and Jacob, but it's not one of the main focuses of the novel. Plus, as I mentioned this before, I would not recommend to little kids because of the high vocab as well as the monster type feel. Kids could easily get nightmares, because the book includes pictures.

The start of the book I ate it up. The further I went into though the more the book lost its spark. I really enjoyed the imaginative side to his writing...I was just expecting a grander more thrilling adventure.

A work of fantasy oriented for teens, I’d say. A good premise, good story, and sufficient action and intrigue to keep most people interested. The writing is of uniformly high quality, though not overly literary in execution. Recommended light reading.

Very good storytelling and the use of the antique photos is cool and unique. Great start to the series.
