This book continues the story of Patty, the main character of the book Summer of My German Soldier. It jumps ahead in time to Patty's high school graduation and her first steps toward independence. Like its predecessor, this book deals with tough topics, and the narrative is not tied up with a neat bow at the end. Since Patty is an adult in this story, she finds herself in adult situations. She also learns that the effects of childhood abuse and trauma will haunt her adulthood. Did I agree with all of the choices that Patty made in the book? No way. Could I see why she acted as she did, based on her past? Absolutely. It's not always an enjoyable book, but it is realistic and fascinating.
