When eight male cadets are left behind at an isolated military high school, the greatest romantic drama ever written seeps out of the classroom and permeates their lives. Incorporating the original text of Romeo and Juliet, YouTube videos, and lip-synched indie rock music, Private Romeo takes us to a mysterious and tender place that only Shakespeare could have inspired.

Oh! Miss Thing! You must watch this video. I would recommend watching it twice, once without subtitles and then the second time with subtitles. Then turn on the director's commentaries the third time you watch it.

Hmmm….here we have proof that although Shakespeare can be “bent”, there is a breaking point. Cadets being addressed as “My Lady’ without irony; the “killings” of Mercutio and Tybalt being reduced to a fistfight in a gym; the “Nurse” and “Friar Lawrence” as fellow cadets---sorry, but it just don’t work. However, the commitment and passion to the project are palpable, the boys are lovely, talented, and they play it (forgive me) straight. Young, forbidden love is convincingly portrayed, but the whole set-up (Shakespeare’s miraculous mise en scene) becomes an irrelevant contrivance. As badly written as “West Side Story” is, at least its essential framework makes sense. Here, unfortunately, it’s simply nonsense.

Sexy retelling of the Romeo and Juliet teen-angst drama set in a military school for boys. The stuff written by Will Shakespeare is actually quite good and the sorta young, sorta straight cast brings it off. The rest of the script relies on jarring YouTube shtick and street speech. (Save your hankies for the Douglas Booth version currently in production.)
