Imagine a mystery that is not about a murder, but about a mechanical duck. A wonderful tale that blends historical figures with fiction. Max Byrd blends time, place and characters in an irresistible mix. He blends the muscularity of the 1920's with memories of the First World War and the prewar European fascination with automata, tracing the fore runners of modern technology and computing back to the 18th century. Though the story seems somewhat fantastical, a few minutes on Wikipedia reveal that most of the characters and events described are real. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
