Describes Pope Francis's journey to the papacy, identifies the most pressing challenges he faces as leader of the Catholic Church, and presents some of his most significant speeches and writings.

After Pope Benedict XVI's historic resignation of the papal office in February 2013, the College of Cardinals elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires -- now Pope Francis -- as the new leader of the world's estimated 1.2 billion Roman Catholics.

But who is this new Pope -- really?

In Francis, a New World Pope, Michel Cool surveys Pope Francis's journey to the papacy, his convictions, his personality, his writings, and the challenges he faces in his new office -- governance of the church, new evangelization in secularized societies, and poverty, among many others.

Peppered throughout with anecdotes that demonstrate the humanity of Pope Francis -- and his sensitivity to those who are most distant from the Church -- this book paints a vibrant portrait of the man who has chosen for his mottomiserando atque eligendo: "lowly but chosen."

Book News
After the startling resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in February 2013, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was elected as the new pope. This book appears as he is still the focus of excitement, both as the first Latin American pope and for his lifestyle that appears to embrace the values of his namesake, St. Francis. After a general introduction, a key second chapter outlines the 10 main challenges facing the new pope. The third chapter includes extracts from his speeches and writings, along with succinct quotes on everything from pedophilia to soccer. Lest people think him too liberal, however, a 2010 letter to the nuns of his diocese asking them to pray against the passage of an Argentinean proposal to legalize same-sex marriage is included. Cool, a French journalist who specializes in religion, closes with an optimistic final chapter that covers the reactions of other bishops, politicians and journalists. Twelve black and white photographs of the new pope appear in the middle of the book. No index is provided. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
