As part of a rehabilitative prison program, inmates at a high-security prison in Rome prepare for a public performance of Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar.' As they rehearse, the prisoners find that the classic play has both a striking resonance and contrast to their confined lives.

The play within a movie is elegantly done. The scene of audition played a very effective introduction. The muddle between Shakespeare characters and prison inmates was intriguing. There was always the suspense that one reality of aggression might overcome the other.
The switching from black and white to colored movie near the end served a little symbolism and it could have been avoided.

pair this with Margaret Atwood's Hag-seed - The Tempest in a prison setting.
this one is more raw, Atwood's tale is more humorous.
