I still don't understand the title after seeing the movie, which is about the Armenian genocide of world war 1 by the Turks. Great information given what happened in ww2. It demonstrates that we don't learn and we don't change, genocide is still in the blood of people around the world.

Beautifully filmed (more so the 1st half) and well acted semi-historical account of the not-so-well-known Armenian genocide by Turks during WWI. Good effort all around!

Excellent historically based film about the WWI genocide by the Turks (Ottoman Empire) upon the small neighboring nation of Armenia.

A beautifully set and costumed film that takes you back into the atmosphere of pre and post-WWI Germany. The story itself seemed to drag out a bit and was not full of plot-twisting moments, but as that speed went well with the general tone of the film and the setting, it wasn't too much of a drawback.

Impressed with Alan Rickman's performance. Believable performance by three main characters and the son was charming. Moved by the kindness to the protege and sensitivity to his poverty. Pleasantly surprised by the plot development which stayed true to the period. Admired the disciplined subtle emotional development of the three main characters. Loved the ending.

A Promise features dutiful wife who struggles with her affection for her older husband's handsome apprentice; it takes place in the the world of yesterday. An intimate story about a love triangle had a distinct old-fashioned quality. The characters are honor-bound. Wienna, Zweig's native city, at the beginning of XX century provides a gorgeous setting. Favorite quote: "We are parted by distance, but also by time. Little by little, the past feels more and more like a foreign country.

Tastefully dull. A lost world that you don't really need to visit. Alan Rickman does his cuckold number again.

A lovely movie. I enjoyed it very much. Plein de finesse psychologique. Une histoire surprenante, tout compte fait.

Patrice Leconte has made some good films (Monsieur Hire, La veuve de Saint-Pierre) and some good entertainments (Ridicule, L'homme du train). Here he both directs and provides the screenplay for a movie based on Stefan Zweig's novella, Journey into the Past. It is not a success. The actors have to grapple with dialogue larded with clichés. Alan Rickman and Rebecca Hall do their best with the poor hand Lecomte has dealt them, but Richard Madden is a non-stop liability. Redeeming features are restricted to (a) Rebecca Hall's neck; (b) her period costumes and hairstyles that evolve nicely over time; and (c) the last five minutes - but it's hard work getting there!

Like watching paint dry, just painful. Don't even bother with this one, watch Birdsong instead.
