May, 1915. Alfie and his fisherman father find a girl on an uninhabited island in the Scillies-- injured, thirsty, lost-- and with absolutely no memory of who she is, or how she came to be there. She can say only one word: Lucy. Is she a mermaid, the victim of a German U-boat, or even, as some islanders suggest, a German spy? Only one thing is for sure: she loves music and moonlight, and it is when she listens to the gramophone that the glimmers of the girl she once was begin to appear.

Alfie and his father are fishing when they find a child on an island--the only word she can say is "Lucy". They take her home and care for her. The village calls the girl Lucy Lost, and no can figure out where she came from. Then people start to believe Lucy is German (the book takes place during war). At the same time, a girl named Merry has her own life going on, and her and Lucy's story are somehow tied together.

I enjoyed this book a lot, it was not what I was expecting (in a good way, it was better!). The characters are very real, the writing is well done, there is no bad language (or scenes), and it gives you a different perspective on the war. I would definitely recommend this to children and adults both. The only part younger children may not like is the ship sinking. That part is very sad. But I liked "Listen to the Moon", it is a book I will most definitely be reading again!

This turned out to be one of my favourite books! I unintentionally learned some history through the reading of this fictional story, which I will actually remember. If I had read a history book or article, I wouldn't remember. But intertwining it with an interesting well-written tale brought history to life for me.

An amazing story that goes so deep into the plot you feel like you're there. By far my favorite book in the universe. A must read.

This latest from Michael Mopurgo of War Horse fame is another delight. He paints a vivid picture of the times a hundred years ago during WWI in the isolated village environment of the Scilly Isles where the sea is paramount.I'm sure it is based on a true story. My granddaughter should enjoy it very much and I'm waiting for her comments.
