Thoughtfully compiled by film historian, Jeremy Arnold - This glossy, well-researched book of stills and text closely looks at 52 mainstream films (all Hollywood productions with the exception of 4 foreign films) from the years 1927-1984.

Arnold gives each film a very serious overview and then he proceeds to explain, in detail, why (from his perspective) each of these particular films "matter".

Since this book was published in 2016 - I certainly found it kinda odd, indeed, that in the span of the last 32 years, Arnold had not found a single film at all that "mattered" enough to be worthy and deserving of its inclusion into his book.

Of course - When it comes to these 52 films - If you have actually seen them for yourself - You may or you may not quite agree with Arnold that these are the ones that really, truly "matter".

You may think that there are other movies out there that "matter" a whole lot more than these ones do.

A chronological listing of movies, heavily illustrated (with labels showing the cast members), describing why these movies were essential to the development of movie industry. Even if reading about the movies you know well and would expect to be on the list, you might find new insights about the studios' thinking why that movie should have been made and who should star in it which is sometimes much different than the finished product we know and love. These insights along with a few movies that you might have limited knowledge of makes for an interesting read.
