An excellent first novel. Engrossing story the flowed fairly well....her second is more polished and also a great read. Good series and a wonderful gritty atmosphere to it.

This was an utterly engrossing read. To me, Hail is the perfect example of a flawed and realistic character -- tough, but with emotions, rash, but with enough experience to understand that and hold back when needed, etc.

The back copy describes her as "rebellious as Han Solo, as savvy as Leia, and as skilled as Rey" which, while not exactly wrong, is also so diminuating. Just as each of those characters is so much more than just a single adjective, Hail has so much more depth than that. She's also much more original than that description makes her sound. That's not to say that parts of her personality aren't created from common tropes. These don't make her any less three dimensional. They're used well and mixed with plenty of originality.

The action is paced perfectly with the character arcs and the bond forming between the main characters. The politics are interesting and the hints of future conflicts. The villains were, maybe, more obvious than I would like, but the mystery of who they were wasn't really a focus of the plot. There is a particular trope used with one that I'm a little tired of, but it doesn't spoil anything. It just makes that particular villain not near as well developed as the protagonists.

There's still quite a bit of the world building (well, universe building) that I'm fuzzy on, since the novel had a pretty tight focus. What I got to experience of it was well done and also engaging.
