For years, Mr. Meacham has told tales of the fierce dragon deep in the woods. To his daughter, Grace, these stories are little more than tall tales, until she meets Pete. Pete is a mysterious ten-year-old with no family who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot.

A solid movie expressing messages of friendship, trust, and family. Always a fan of Bryce Dallas Howard.

After his parents are killed in a car accident, a young boy named Pete (Oakes Fegley) finds an unlikely caregiver in the form of a dragon (whom he dubs "Elliot") living in a forest in the Pacific Northwest. Years later, a forest ranger (Bryce Dallas Howard) discovers Pete and takes him in, but his attempts to adjust to a normal life are complicated by a man (Karl Urban) who wants to hunt down Elliot. Wes Bentley, Oona Laurence, and Robert Redford co-star. Directed by David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints), Pete's Dragon is a remake of the 1977 children's movie of the same name. ~ Jack Rodgers, Rovi

Director David Lowery pours the Disney syrup thick and sticky all over this overtly sentimental reboot of the 1977 non-classic, but he does so with such manipulative skill—not to mention awesome CGI effects—that he manages to keep things just this side of mawkish. Cute cherubs wise beyond their years, doltish authorities who don’t have a clue, and a few grownups who desperately want to BELIEVE again (Robert Redford approaching rock bottom as an affable old grandfather) round out the usual suspects in this kind of production while the loveable fur-covered dragon hovers somewhere between a slobbering puppy (he chases his own tail and snaps at butterflies!) and a big lime-coloured chesterfield. Thankfully the Pacific Northwest scenery, played by New Zealand, is pretty to look at and the action moves along at a fair clip despite an intrusive orchestral score that insists we laugh or cry at just the right moments. Steadfastly inoffensive (unless you work in the logging industry) with smiles and happy endings all around, this is definitely one for the single-digit age group—after all, who wouldn’t want their very own dragon?!

Not quite as offensive, but somehow it's even more boring than the original one.

This was a delightful surprise. I had never seen the original Disney film, and I knew little about this one before I watched it. I found it charming and sweet. I often find movie children extremely annoying, but I liked Pete. I loved Elliott. The dragon special effects were very good. I enjoyed this far more than I was expecting. It is a true family film that can be enjoyed by all ages.
