From Taylor Jenkins Reid, "a genius when it comes to stories about life and love" (Redbook), comes an unforgettable and sweeping novel about one classic film actress's relentless rise to the top, the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine. Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband, David, has left her, and her career has stagnated. Regardless of why Evelyn has chosen her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn's Upper East Side apartment, Monique listens as Evelyn unfurls her story: from making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the late 80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. As Evelyn's life unfolds, revealing a ruthless ambition, an unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love, Monique begins to feel a very a real connection to the actress. But as Evelyn's story catches up with the present, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways.

Maybe I should have stuck with this read longer or read it twice.... I could not get interested. I was on a very long wait list, for what?

Okay, so The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was a lot different than Taylor Jenkins Reid's previous novels. And I'll just come right out and say that the different themes presented within this story made me uncomfortable. For example, Reid addressed issues like race, ethnicity, women's rights, and homosexuality. I'll admit that halfway through this novel, I was a slightly irked by this because I perceived it as an attempt to get readers to accept her personal outlook of the world as their own. And who knows, maybe it was. But as I continued to read, I realized how narrow-minded I was being as a result of my own views and biases.

Like most authors, Reid wrote this novel based on how she views the world and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. So once I recognized that and got out of my feelings about it, I was able to appreciate this story for how good it really is. Overall, I still believe that Taylor Jenkins Reid is a great writer and I will continue to read her books.

This novel was on many 2017 summer reading lists : the thumbnail plot description piqued my curiosity. I don't usually read "glam" books, but the story line was intriguing: an aging, beautiful and reclusive Hollywood movie icon is finally ready to dish her scandalous, privileged life. She chooses an unknown magazine reporter to do so (and will consider no one else). Is this Ava Gardner's rags to riches biography in story form?
Readers hear Evelyn's life story as Monique (the reporter) takes notes, so the book is presented as a series of chapter - long flashbacks set into the current day .
The writing was good, the story was full of plot twists, and certainly some research into old Hollywood's mechanisms meant a fairly satisfying read. This isn't great literature, but it's entertaining and nicely put together.
My only real quibble is that author Taylor Jenkins Reid seemed undecided about what the book was really going to consist of - there are a few too many things swirling around. Is this a book about human rights? Is this a book about the wide range of loving relationships in the world? Is it a kind of mystery? Or, is it simply a fictional (albeit interesting) actress biography?
You'll have to read it to decide - and the journey is a decent one.

Absolutely love this book! Could not put it down. Took me on a trip back to L.A. and so much Hollywood drama. Wanted to compare the story of Evelyn Hugo to all the movie stars I grew up watching from the '50s to today.

Somehow, I don't share the same enthusiasm like other readers here....Felt like reading a tabloid, nothing else.

A luxurious read, and the perfect book to devour as summer comes to an end. A glamourous, Oscar winning star from the golden age of Hollywood has finally decided to share the story of her life in a tell-all biography. All about the passion and ambition that drove her to succeed, her seven marriages, her secret loves, the games she played to get ahead in Hollywood, and the one great love of her life. If you are a movie buff and a fan of the Golden age in Hollywood where stars like Gable, Clift, Leigh, Garbo, Monroe, Hepburn, Tracy etc. graced the screens, then this is the book for you. A wonderful read

Good beach read. A legendary movie star tells her life story, which is very different from the one the public knows.
