"Before he retired, J. P. Beaumont had looked forward to having his days all to himself. But too much free time doesn't suit a man used to brushing close to danger. When his longtime nemesis, retired Seattle crime reporter Maxwell Cole, dies in whats officially deemed to be an accidental fire, Beau is astonished to be dragged into the investigation at the request of none other than the deceased victim himself. In the process Beau learns that just because a long-ago case was solved doesn't mean it's over. Caught up in a situation where old actions and grudges can hold dangerous consequences in the present, Beau is forced to operate outside the familiar world of law enforcement. While seeking justice for his frenemy and healing for a long fractured family, he comes face to face with an implacable enemy who has spent decades hiding in plain sight." -- From publisher's description.

Substandard JP Beaumont mystery. The reader will endure page after page throughout the book about a dog the Beaumonts have rescued. Meanwhile, an investigation of a reporter's death is being conducted, but it seems like an after-thought. Dog people will like the book, others maybe not.

Hurray, another JP Beaumont book. For any lover of Seattle, this series not only incorporates well-known landmarks but has a plausible interesting plot.

BORING! To much content devoted to a dog. In my opinion JANCE is one of those people who assign human characteristics to an animal.

JA Jance can keep writing JP Beaumont books as long as she likes - I'll continue ready them because they're very, very good. Her characters are great, the stories are strong, being situation in my hometown of Seattle (and surrounds) will always make them fun for me.

One of her best books ever

i am again impressed with Jance's ability to write such a great story with characters who have been through so much, aging throughout the books, retiring, sort of un-retiring, dying, marrying, etc... often a writer seems to have to keep their ongoing characters in familiar, almost suspended in time situations, to keep them going. But Beau and Co are still going strong - a credit to an exceptional writer whose skills have not diminished, and the great characters she created and loves and continues to give life to.
