Toni Erdmann" is a 162-minute comedy/drama from Germany about a prank-loving older man who pays a surprise visit to his corporate consultant adult daughter and begins to throw her uptight life into chaos. That plot description could easily apply to a traditional Hollywood comedy that probably wouldn't be very good, but the genius of writer-director Maren Ade's film is how she portrays these characters like fully dimensional human beings and grounds their actions in a believable way even as things escalate to hilariously crazy levels. The movie also works because Ade mixes the humor with real earned drama and emotion, so that by the end you really end up caring about this lovably awkward father-daughter relationship.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Shoulda listened to the reviews that this movie was way too long & drawn out. Woulda spent 3 hours outside watching the grass grow instead. Coulda made more sense out of the grass growing than this bizarre, painfully slow movie. If they would have ended the movie after 90 minutes, after the conversation with her boss, I would have said "interesting movie, well done", but the next 90 minutes just got monotonous & way too art school bizarre. Like others, I was left wondering what was the point.

Often slow and at times almost painful to watch (I was never sure what the point of the film was as none of the characters appeared to advance in terms of personal growth no matter how many lessons or roadblocks they seemed to come up against), but the characters and their often weird arcs (and the continual head butts between father and daughter) had an odd appeal nevertheless.

At nearly three hours, "Toni Erdmann" is expansive but rarely self-indulgent, and the emotional payoff, when it comes, feels truly and bizarrely earned.

Believe me when I's possibly one of the worst movies ever!! ...I can't believe it was nominated for an Academy Award!!...I won't even mention how totally creepy it was...I will never look at a "Petit Four" the same way ever again...I may need therapy :(

5-stars - This movie isn't for everyone; the pacing is slow to build and the director lets the camera linger, especially toward the end.
You can take the story straight-up: a father's journey to confront his fractured relationship with his daughter -- which results in mega-awkward, zany, fraught set of circumstances. Or you can take it as a modern day Greek fable. However you do, stick with it. And pay attention to Sandra Huller, who plays the daughter. Her facial expressions carry so much. Tremendous actress.

We found little to like in any of the shallow, cold-fish characters (which was perhaps the point?) Managed to watch most of it to the end, coming to realize too late that both father and daughter were incapable of being real and so neither had anything to offer the other.
If that was the point, they could have arrived at it a lot sooner.

I wanted to see what all the noise was about, but I'm still not sure that I know. There are some very funny scenes, and the send-up of corporate culture is delightful. Sandra Hüller (remember her from "Requiem"?) is a pleasure to watch, with or without her clothes. But some scenes are needless and thoroughly off-putting, and the whole movie eventually takes on the air of an overlong joke that became tiresome a half-hour ago.

Thank you Ottawa Public Library for obtaining foreign films. This is a prime example of a thoroughly enjoyable, cerebral and non-Hollywoodian movie. Highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a film that explores relationships with panache and humour.

How was your night with the Chinese?
-Well, after 30 minutes they were drunk. So I sat there for five hours, listening to Mandarin. But I sold one flat, at least.
-So that's good.
Oh, yeah, because we were just fighting over...who had the most horrible weekend.
-Steph was in Naples.
How was it? What happened? It's filthy, the food was disgusting. Even the kids were dying to get back, so, you know.
--Well, I probably had the most horrible weekend of my entire life, actually. Yeah. My father visited me spontaneously, without any warning. He was there standing in my office... pretending he wanted to bring me my birthday present... but actually he was just having a crisis because his dog died at home. Henneberg (CEO of company) was wanting me to go out with him and his wife the whole time. ... And my father was sitting around, making spaghetti... trying to talk with me about the meaning of life, whatever that is. Strange.

I've hired a substitute daughter.
-Perfect. She will call on your birthday instead of me.
And what's most important when dealing with the clients?
-That no concept makes sense if the client doesn't want it. The art is to tell the client what he actually wants.
Good evening. I'm only the father.
-Henneberg. Are you visiting?
A spontaneous decision. Never been to Romania. I'm actually here to negotiate with her. She's hardly home anymore so I hired a substitute daughter. Now comes the question who pays her.
- That's a modern solution.
- Is the other daughter better?
The cakes are better. She cuts my toenails.

So... Are you a bit happy here, at least?
-What do you mean by happiness"? It's such a strong word...
I mean do you have a bit of a life, too? Like going to the movies or something?
-Well, yes... just doing something you enjoy.
Lots of words around here: fun, happiness, life... We should sort it out. What do you think it's worth living for?
-If you want to discuss the big topics... I can't say that off the top of my head. I really just wanted to know how you're doing.
I know that. But then you should have your own answers.
Women's group? What are the themes?
-Gender quotas, sexual harassment at work, things like that.
Business nail polish?

It's actually more interesting and Romanian than the Ceausescu palace. It's Europe's largest mall and no one has money to buy anything.
And who did you leave Willi with?
-Well, Willi... Willi, unfortunately, has died.
What? I'm so sorry.
-He was an old dog.
Why didn't you call me?
-Because I don't always have the time, either.
Dad, these processes mean hundreds of employees being transferred and later laid off. These decisions are unpopular, so he would need to blame someone else. Then you can read in the paper that some consulting firm has ruined something.

The Dombrechts are cutting your hedges tomorrow. You are blocking their sun.
-At last. I'll be able to shoot right into their living room.
About what's worth of living. The problem is... it's so often about getting things done. You do this, you do that... And in the meantime... life just passes by. But how are we supposed to hang on to moments? Now I sometimes sit there and remember how you learned to ride your bike... or how I once found you at a bus stop. But you only realize that afterwards. In the moment itself it's not possible.
Please, can you just tell him not to fire that man or something?
-That's up to him. The more he fires, the fewer I have to fire.
Do you have any plans in life other than slipping fart cushions under people?
-I don't own a fart cushion.
I know men your age who still have ambitions.
