"In the wake of tragic events in Charlottesville, VA, and Donald Trump's initial refusal to denounce the white nationalists behind it all, the "antifa" opposition movement is suddenly appearing everywhere. But what is it, precisely? And where did it come from? As long as there has been fascism, there has been anti-fascism--also known as "antifa." Born out of resistance to Mussolini and Hitler in Europe during the 1920s and '30s, the antifa movement has suddenly burst into the headlines amidst opposition to the Trump administration and the alt-right. They could be seen in news reports, often clad all in black with balaclavas covering their faces, fighting police at the presidential inauguration, and on California college campuses protesting right-wing speakers, and most recently, on the streets of Charlottesville, VA. Simply, antifa aims to deny fascists the opportunity to promote their oppressive politics--by any means necessary. Critics say shutting down political adversaries is anti-democratic; antifa adherents argue that the horrors of fascism must never be allowed the slightest chance to triumph again. In a smart and gripping investigation, historian and former Occupy Wall Street organizer Mark Bray provides a one-of-a-kind look inside the movement, including a detailed survey of its history from its origins to the present day --the first transnational history of postwar anti-fascism in English. Based on interviews with anti-fascists from around the world, Antifa details the tactics of the movement and the philosophy behind it, offering insight into the growing but little understood resistance fighting back against the alt-right"-- Provided by publisher.

Mark Bray's book is a good introduction about what Anti-fascism actually is, and why it is becoming so important in our contemporary context. Interesting primary source materials and interviews with Antifascists from America and Europe. Solid historical criticisms as well of what Antifascist movements did right and what they did wrong in the past. The chapter on Free Speech also has some solid criticisms of the way the alt-right exploits this concept.

Heard a radio show program on Antifa by a member and lecturer at Dartmouth [immediately, I am becoming more suspicious] a short time ago on KEXP's Mind Over Matters show [Saturday and Sunday mornings from 6:00 am to 9:00 am]. The Dartmouth lecturer explained that it is pronounced AHHN-tifas, which surprised me since once would presume to pronounce anti as anti?!?!?! [The Dartmouth lecturer said he was highly annoyed at it constantly being mispronounced - - thank goodness he gets upset over monumental events!!]
Was not impressed with his lecture. Am not impressed by repeated attacks by antifas on police at those marches to insure civil behavior. Am also not impressed by rather revisionistic history of those supposedly // antifascist \\ organizations. Certainly first I have heard of them, and I've read a bit of history over the years. They obviously did not do a very good job of it, as they failed miserably, assuming this sudden historical narrative is accurate, which I've yet to see proven?!?!? [I always repeat the well-known refrain, Follow the money! Who is financing them, and who or what is financing any white supremacy groups?]
