It’s best to know going in that all of these characters are super unlikeable, and they’re supposed to be. Despite the title, this movie is more Bronte than Shakespeare, with its awful main characters and deranged romance. I started out disliking it but I couldn’t look away, and by the end it had won me over. I think it’s Florence Pugh’s magnetic performance that really makes the film (I’m a little scared of her now). A strange, cold film that you probably won’t like if you hate Wuthering Heights.

Unlikeable characters in a plodding low-key mishmash of hopeless MacBeth meets 50 Shades of Grey.

The movie was horrible,everyone was
cruel, cold and nasty. No woman of that day would have gotten away with what she did.Every character was twisted and evil before they even meet.Do not recommend no stars.

Wed into a cold, unforgiving family, with a bitter man would make any young woman tap into their resources. Lady Macbeth (Florence Paige) takes cares of herself in a brutal way. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. I liked it!

This period drama (Rural England 1865) is somewhat slow to start, but the tension builds as the story progresses. I'd agree with the comment on the cover of the DVD case: Imagine Alfred Hitchcock directing Wuthering Heights.
The main character is superbly played by Florence Pugh. Is she a tragic result of poor treatment by her husband or is she an evil villain? Interesting ending....

A fairly good film but it has some problems, for example, why - since the action is taking place in the 19th-century United Kingdom (most likely Scotland) - one of the characters is named Boris, and several others are black? The former is explained by the fact that the script is based on a Russian novel by Leskov; the latter probably by political correctness.

This movie is vaguely like Shakespeare's Macbeth. But even so, it shows an intolerable situation for a woman in upper society Aristocratic Pre-Victorian Briton. The constant "waiting" women had to endure and not being allowed to leave the house has its origins as recently in 20th century Buckingham palace as it turns out. I recall leaked reports of Princess Diana being required to REMAIN in her bed chambers much in the same way for months on end. She even had to take all meals in her room. Its like being a prisoner. Perhaps worse - The palace kitchen was a 1/4 mile away and the food was always cold when delivered.
The main character shows how a head strong woman would react when pushed too far to her psychological limits; it comes out as murder & intrigue. Shakespeare knew of these types of mental taxations and the writer of this adaptation included it too. This movie might be too much for American audiences as we don't have the class society divisions that still exist [more or less] in the UK.

Harsh treatment in Britain, 1865, in most cases goes unpunished. Not in this case. A couple of backward male chauvinists get their comeuppance. This film gives you an idea of what issues Alfred Hitchcock might have tackled if he didn't have the Hays Code lurking against him in every film. I found this to be one of the best films that I've seen in the last year. As the shadow said, "Evil lurks in the hearts of men (in this case, a woman)."

Previews were good which drew me to want to see movie. Audio was bad and I did try two differant players. Not what I expected.

This movie was a real disappointment. I did not even finish it. To many graphic scenes. It was really a waste of time.!!!
