I congratulate Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman in acting in some diverse films, however this film wasn't really worth the effort for me. This revenge story, has been done much better in other films, than this one.
I found it difficult to reason the actions by the husband, and of how the events played out to make the results that this film went with.
This director also did the 2015 film, The Lobster, of which I disliked even more.
Even though I struggled with watching this film, I can appreciate the actors and their abilities to perform in this too weird of and disconnected film. I blame the writer and director for the "stiff" dialogue.
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos in 2017 based on the ancient Greek play "Iphigenia at Aulis" by Euripides, this psychological horror story follows a cardiac surgeon who secretly befriends a teenage boy with a connection to his past.
The original Greek play revolves around Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek coalition before and during the Trojan War, and his decision to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigenia, to appease the goddess Artemis and allow his troops to set sail to preserve their honour in battle against Troy.
The film adaptation appears silly and unrealistic from today's perspective.
Even a great director could NOT create a good film from the ill-contrived script.
This is definitely a total flop.
Greek tragedy in the modern American suburbs. Strange, weird movie with excellent actors.
The marketing blurb on the DVD jacket inadequately describes this movie as "unsettling". Synonyms for "unsettle" are more helpful - "excite, disorder, agitate, confuse, upset, disturb, spook", and I'd add these words - "chilling, creepy, disquieting, menacing, violent."
All the characters are remote and detached. The consistency of the characters' coldness is irritating and unbelievable. The advertised ending ("stunning act of revenge") is also understated - try "grotesque fantasy". The DVD I took out had no Special Features option. Don't squander your valuable time by watching this depleting movie.
Try other Colin Farrell movies: In Bruges, London Boulevard, Roman J. Israel Esq.
Try other Nicole Kidman movies: Moulin Rouge, The Others, Lion
I thought the first part of the movie was pretty good, getting into the mystery of it, but then something happened to it that made the whole thing just fall apart. The second half was Just senseless. And dumb. Sorry, I would not recommend it to an adult, but I think kids like this kind of stuff.
"The Killing of A Sacred Deer" is pretty disturbing alright, but it's a good movie. From the same director, I also like his other work "the Lobster". Man, he has very extraordinary view on things.
Great cast, well directed, awful story. Stuck with it hoping it would get better, but it didn't. Take a pass.
Content warning: If you have children, this will be a very disturbing film experience.
With only three films Greek writer/director Yorgos Lanthimos (great name) has established himself as one of the most original, unsettling, and strangest directors working. There is little like "Dogtooth" or "The Lobster," which was an unlikely dystopian dark comedy love story. His most recent film is his most uneven work. I wanted to finish it because it was compelling, but I also wanted to end because it was pretty messed up. He maintains a ominously calm tone throughout and the performances are similarly detached. I usually don't like Nicole Kidman and Collin Ferrell, but they're well used here. It's loosely based on the Iphigenia myth, but that won't really help you make sense of it.
it is a very unusual, strange and bizarre movie but very interesting to watch until the end. you wander what will happen until the end.....and of course the twisted end of the big sacrifice of an amazing surgeon who makes the big mistake that cost him a lost of a dad on the surgeon table. The hidden revenge of his son in a very unusual way of turning the surgeon's life and his family up site down....... Ultimate sacrifice : Killing the sacred deer.......Great acting performance of Nicole Kidman. worthwhile to take the taime to see.
This was a very dark movie. I stuck it out to its horrible end. It was well done but it is definitely not a feel good movie.
