One perceptive reviewer at the time of this film's release summed it up pretty well when he noted MacLaine's performance as splendid but complained that Bob Fosse directed with too much flash, "as though he didn't trust the material." Still, the musical numbers are sexy and memorable, MacLaine is touching and funny as the hapless title character Charity, and dancers Chita Rivera (the original Anita in the Broadway cast of "West Side Story") and Paula Kelly are solid support as Charity's street-smart best friends.
