Bizarre, surreal 1986 gem from the uniquely twisted mind of visionary director/screenwriter David Lynch (Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, etc...). A 'neo noir' that was panned by the critics, it has since become a cult classic. The cast was selected flawlessly: Kyle MacLachlan, the wholesome good guy lead with the 'boy next door' looks and charm; his 'girl Friday', a 19 year old doe-eyed Laura Dern... sweet and innocent; Isabella Rossellini as the exotic and erotic Italian lounge singer (nutjob) in distress; Ah...and then there's (the late great) Dennis Hopper. (LOL). The demented, sociopathic, drug huffing, sadistic lunatic with his band of cackling crazies roaring around in their early 70's Dodge Charger. You can just see it in his eyes how much he enjoyed this role. I can't put my finger on it, but I've always loved this flick for some reason... David Lynch's work is eccentric, artistic... Maybe that's what it is. It stands out from the usual drivel.
