The sequel to Carson's "Autobiography of Red," "Red Doc>" is different in typography (the verse is now in single narrow, news-clipping-esque columns along the full page) and in cast of characters (with Carson straying further away from the original Stesichoros: Geryon is now simply G, and a wartorn Herakles simply "Sad But Great - capital S capital B capital G"), but it is an equally powerful text - and in the case of the final 20 pages, moreso. While "Autobiography" was a Joycean Bildungsroman with photography a key means of self-discovery, "Red Doc>" is a study of middle age, and of death, with Proust this time looming over the piece.
