When Joseph Bruchac (who is both a prolific and fine writer) sat down to write this book, I like to think that he thought "Hmmm, what SF tropes should I include?". And then he couldn't decide so he put in ALL of them. There are elements of Buffy the Vampire Slayer slayers and vampires, cyberpunk, traditional monsters and spirits, genetically engineered monsters, ESP and more, all set in post-apocalyptic world where...... well you get the idea. The only trope that doesn't turn up are the Dragons of Pern, but their influence is apparent in book 2. What I really like about this book is the blend of Native American cultures and beliefs that tie this book together. It's an adventurous romp with a strong female lead - give it a go.
