One of the most inspiring war stories to ever exist, Mel Gibson embarks on his journey to bring this truly praiseworthy adventure of historical figure, Desmond Doss, to cinemas. ‘Hacksaw Ridge’, one of the finest modern day interpretations in movie form of true heroic stories of men who made the ultimate sacrifice for their nation. This movie takes place during the battle for Okinawa in WWII, and we all have a genuine idea about the tough decisions and sacrifices people had to make about 75 years ago around the globe. But what made this movie stick out more than the rest wasn’t because Andrew Garfield was casted as the main role. It was because the story was about Desmond Doss! Who, in my opinion, is a legendary hero, who won not only one, but many medals for his contributions in the battles he took part in, including the Medal of Honour. The best part is that he achieved all that without touching one weapon! Without being the reason why a man wouldn’t get to see his wife and children again. He did not kill ONE single enemy. So props to Mr. Gibson and a big thanks for bringing more recognition to this hero in a spectacular and appropriate way. My favorite part was when Desmond ran into an injured Japanese enemy underground, and instead of leaving him there injured or killing him, he aided him. It was a true heroic move as it takes more courage to spare a life than to take one. Though this movie is Rated-R, I’d recommend anyone 14 and up to give it a watch. It’s most critical for our generation to stay fresh with our history and learn a few things while they’re at it, and never forget those who fought and gave their lives to help shape the world into what it is today. @Virago of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library This was a great movie. It’s based on a true story that happened in WWII. Andrew Garfield played the character Desmond Doss who was a war medic and a hero. I think he did a fantastic job of playing this character. He refused to carry a weapon in the war and was hated, bullied and tormented by his fellow soldiers. He stood by his principles anyway and saved 75 lives and became a hero instead of an outcast. This one starts a bit slow but it’s worth the wait for the action. I highly recommend this movie as it is an amazing story but be warned it is extremely gory. If you don’t like to see war in a movie then don’t watch this one because it is really graphic. On the other hand if you like war movies this is one of the best I’ve seen. 5/5 Stars. @McRee of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board
