A solid 4.5 stars for this new superheroes vs supervillains story from Marissa Meyer. This book features an action-packed plot that starts out with an enigmatic proclamation from Nova aka Nightmare, the strong female lead character: "One cannot be brave, who has no fear," as she leaves her first confrontation with the enigmatic Sentinel (Renegade Adrian aka Sketch in disguise). Soon enough we see Nova who begins the story on the side of the Anarchists, seeking to infiltrate the ranks of the ruling superheroes or Renegades so that she can help her team overthrow them. After an impressive tryout using the code name Insomnia, Nova is assigned to Adrian's team and the reader watches as the two seek outwardly work together while they have very different goals and do not realize that their adversary is right beside them. Double identities and superhero skills aside, this book asks the question: Would the world be better off without superpowers? Would ordinary people step up and help each other if they didn't have superheroes to do the heavy lifting? Fascinating! Looking forward to Episode #2.
