This seems pretty clearly to be meant as a Biblical analogy, with the Poet representing God, the Mother as the earth, and the marauding fans of the Poet as God's followers, who love Him but end up doing far more harm than good. The film is more or less divided into two parts, the second an altered and more intense version of the first, presumably referring to the Old and New Testament. The problem is, it just isn't a very good Biblical analogy. The symbolism is frequently way off, the story doesn't hang together, and some of the scenes are too prolonged and monotonous. As the filmmaker is an atheist, it may have been intended more as a Biblical critique than a metaphor; in that context it makes a bit more sense. Note: contains some very gruesome horror scenes.
